Saving money on your existing loans

Saving money on your existing loans
10th August 2007

If you have a high interest loan that you are trying to make repayments on, and you are struggling with the amount that you have to repay each month – and fed up with the amount of interest that you are repaying – there are a number of steps that you could take to try and save money on your existing loan. There are a number of options available to borrowers based on your needs and circumstances, and by choosing the right option you could save a small fortune on interest as well as on monthly repayments of your existing loan.

The first option is to switch to another lender by finding a loan that offers a lower APR, which means that you will not be paying as much interest. If you have good credit then you will find a choice of loans available to you, some with very competitive interest rates, and if you are a homeowners you will find even more choice available as you can enjoy the option of taking out a low rate homeowner loan, which also offers longer repayment periods and can therefore mean reduced monthly repayments. You do need to be careful, however, and check that there are no hefty penalty fees applied on your existing loan for repaying it early.

If you current loan is an unsecured one, then the chances are that you are paying over a shorter period, which means that your monthly repayments are far higher than they would be with a homeowner loan, which is a secured loan. By switching to a homeowner loan you can pay off your unsecured loan(s), and then stretch the repayment period out to keep your monthly outgoings down – you could even borrow a little extra on top to treat yourself to a special holiday, new car, or something else that you have been dreaming of. You should always think as to if or not that is the best option for you, as a having the new loans over a very much longer period, you are in effect borrowing the money for a longer period.

Another very effective option is to consider a consolidation loan, and this can prove very effective because it means that in addition to paying off your high interest loan you can also pay off smaller, high interest debts such as credit cards and store cards, which can cut your monthly outgoings and interest payments even further. You will find that a low interest consolidation loan can reduce the hassle of having to deal with different creditors each month, can cut back on the amount of interest that you pay overall, and can reduce your monthly outgoings by a significant amount in some cases.
